The Tamworth Opportunity Hub employs a Program Coordinator and a team of Futures Mentors who work with local schools and a network of partners to match Aboriginal students from Year 5 to post-school with employment, mentoring, scholarships, internships and volunteer work to help them reach their potential and realise their career aspirations.
The Opportunity Hub achieves this work by engaging young Aboriginal people and their families early on at school through a variety of programs that include cultural learning, Aboriginal dance and language, Aboriginal arts and crafts, and health and wellbeing.
The Opportunity Hub’s Futures Mentors track and support Aboriginal people’s progress throughout their school life and through their transition to employment.
The Opportunity Hub currently partners with 12 local schools. Between 300 and 500 young people are regularly engaged in Opportunity Hub programs each school term.
Students are supported by dedicated Futures Mentors who provide personalised guidance, encouragement, and practical support throughout their education journey.
School-based cultural programs give students opportunities to engage in Aboriginal dance, language, traditional arts, and meaningful connection to Country - helping strengthen cultural identity and pride.
Programs focus on strengthening identity, aspirations, goal setting, community connection, and resilience, helping young people feel supported in both school and life.
Students participate in activities that support physical, social, and emotional wellbeing in a safe and culturally supportive environment.
Held throughout the year, Career Planning Days expose students to different career pathways, industries, training opportunities, and future planning support.
Our annual Careers on Country program at Trelawney Station provides students with an immersive on-Country experience focused on career exploration, leadership, culture, and connection.
A youth leadership and development program that builds confidence, teamwork, and cultural pride, culminating in the annual NAIDOC Debutante Ball.
Students are connected with scholarships, internships, volunteer opportunities, and employment pathways to help support their future goals and aspirations.

After first joining the LALC’s programs as an Opportunity Hub student, Deneesha received support and participated in Opportunity Hub programs at Peel High School. She intended to complete her senior studies but found it difficult to access the academic support she needed for assessments. As a post-school student, Deneesha was supported to gain experience in a number of roles, and completed some of her hospitality studies while working for the Joblink Plus Connections Cafe, before transitioning to an Admin traineeship with the LALC in 2026.
In her traineeship, Deneesha will complete a Certificate III in Business (Administration) through Tamworth Community College while working with the Tamworth LALC and alongside the Tamworth Opportunity Hub team.
Deneesha is excelling in the role so far, and has been active working with a range of the LALC’s teams to provide administrative support services, as well as supporting a number of the LALC’s major community engagement events for the year including the Aboriginal Cultural Showcase, Careers on Country, and BounceBack.
Deneesha shows excellent leadership skills and initiative, and a passion for working as part of the broader LALC team and within the community. She is already an asset to the LALC and we are looking forward to watching her grow in her role as the year progresses.
