The Tamworth LALC Post-School Support Officer program supports Aboriginal young people transitioning from school into training and jobs.
The Tamworth LALC Post-School Support Officer (PSSO) is funded through NIAA and focuses on supporting young people in the early stage of their tertiary training or career journeys. The PSSO makes and maintain strong relationships with participating high schools, industry, employer and training partners; working to understand emerging industries, skills shortage and employment trends; and work alongside other Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council (TLALC) programs, primarily the Opportunity Hub. The support provided extends beyond the initial transition, taking a holistic approach that addresses both practical needs and broader personal wellbeing through tailored individual support.
Support is tailored to the individual and may include practical assistance such as obtaining essential identification documents, creating resumes and cover letters, job searching and applications, interview preparation and workplace readiness skills.
Participants may also be connected with driving lessons and licence support, mentoring, confidence building and guidance to help navigate the transition into further study, training or work.
The program recognises that everyone’s journey is different. Support may also include help to overcome personal barriers and challenges that could impact participation or success.
Where additional assistance is needed beyond the scope of the PSSO role, Jayde can provide referrals and connections to other appropriate services and supports.
Since 2022, the Post-School Support Officer program has provided one-on-one support to approximately 160 young people, while also engaging hundreds more senior school students through career classes, industry visits and career-focused excursions.
Participants have successfully transitioned into a diverse range of employment pathways aligned with their individual goals and interests, including roles as diverse as dental assistant to mining, and trades apprenticeships to community services. The program has also supported young people pursuing further education, assisting students to access university transition programs, gain entry into their chosen degrees, and secure scholarships and bursaries.
This has included assistance to obtain driver licences, connect with medical and mental health services, and overcome barriers that may otherwise impact their ability to participate in training, study or employment opportunities.
