The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council's vision is to represent its members and the wider Aboriginal community in its aims to protect their heritage, preserve their culture and foster their best interests.
We successfully accomplish this by creating our own opportunities and building pride, self-esteem, respect and financial stewardship for present and future generations whilst using the assets of land, people and culture.

Our Story
The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council (TLALC) was established on 2 February 1984 under the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, landmark legislation that recognised the dispossession of Aboriginal people and provided a framework for land rights and self-determination.
For more than 40 years, TLALC has worked to advance the social, cultural, economic and community aspirations of Aboriginal people across the Tamworth region. Through strong local leadership and community engagement, we strive to create opportunities, protect cultural heritage, and support positive outcomes for current and future generations.
As one of the largest Aboriginal membership organisations in the region, TLALC represents more than 1,200 members and their families. Our core purpose is to work for the benefit of Aboriginal people, ensuring that our activities, programs and services respond to the needs, priorities and aspirations of the communities we serve.

What we do
The Tamworth LALC is a housing provider managing over 20 local homes. We manage a range of programs focused on youth development including Bounce Back, Tamworth Opportunity Hub, the Community Connector, Post-School Support Officer and Fresh Footprints (a TLALC Social Enterprise), as well as programs that work to achieve our cultural goals including Bumbira Arts and Culture Program, the Walaaybaa Rangers and Junior Ranger programs.
To fulfil our role the TLALC works in partnership with a number of local organisations. We are an active member of the Tamworth Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (TACCO), a local coalition of ACCOs which works strategically to deliver priorities identified by the Aboriginal community. We also sit on numerous other multi-agency groups that align with our priorities, as outlined in our current Community, Land and Business Plan 2024 - 2029.
Our relationships with like-minded organisations across the region add a broad range of expertise and opportunities that are mobilised to benefit our Aboriginal membership.
How the Tamworth LALC Operates
The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council (TLALC) operates in accordance with the governance requirements set out in the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983. This framework ensures that the organisation remains accountable to its members and the broader Aboriginal community while working to achieve its cultural, social and economic objectives.
Board of Directors
TLALC is governed by a Board of elected members drawn from across the Aboriginal communities we serve. Any member of the LALC can stand for election, subject to the requirements of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) . Board elections are held every four years, with Board members serving for the duration of the term or until the election of the next Board.
The Board provides strategic leadership and oversight for the organisation. Its role is to ensure that TLALC remains focused on community priorities, meets its legislative responsibilities, and delivers on its commitments to members and the wider Aboriginal community.
Community Land and Business Plan
Every four years, TLALC develops a Community Land and Business Plan (CLBP). The CLBP is the organisation's key strategic document, setting out the community's priorities, aspirations and goals for the coming term.
The development of the CLBP is a key opportunity for Aboriginal people across the Tamworth region to have a voice in shaping the future direction of the Land Council and identifying the outcomes that matter most to the community.
Management and Operations
While the Board provides governance and strategic direction, the day-to-day operations of TLALC are managed by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and a team of dedicated staff.
The CEO and staff are responsible for delivering programs, services and projects, managing organisational operations, and implementing the priorities outlined in the Community Land and Business Plan. The Board monitors progress against these priorities, ensuring that the organisation remains responsive to community needs and accountable to its members.
Together, the Board, staff, members and community work to ensure that TLALC continues to create opportunities, protect Aboriginal interests, and build a strong future for Aboriginal people in the Tamworth region.
