What is a place- based partnership?
A place-based partnership refers to a shared- decision making partnership between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives, Coalition of Peaks members and the government. The place-based partnership ensures the active participation of all parties. At its core, the partnership is a new way of working together to reach the targets set in the Closing the Gap National Agreement.
After being selected as an appropriate location for a place-based partnership, chosen community members or groups will work with the government and Coalition of Peaks members to design an agreement where objectives, scope and other terms of the place-based partnership are agreed upon. After this, they will enter into a formal agreement and will beginning working towards the goals of the partnership. Ongoing monitoring, reporting and evaluation is conducted to determine the effectiveness of the terms agreed upon in the partnership, and whether improvements can be made.
Benefits of a place- based partnership for communities:
- Develops and strengthens local governance
- Supports them to define and pursue their priorities and aspirations
- Grows community led initiatives
- Ensures governments are working in partnership with communities towards their goals
